Art Of Affection
Vomiting is common in dogs thus owners would not really be concerned with the condition of the pet. Vomiting is common even in healthy dogs thus owners would commonly ignore the pet that is throwing up more so if the pet is not showing any sign of ill health. Apart for being voracious eaters, dogs also have the propensity to eat non-edible substances. The tendency to eat too much as well as the indiscriminate eating habit often ends up in a spate of vomiting.
The dogs dietary indiscretion would often result to stomach upset so that the dog will be seen heaving and throwing up the contents of the stomach. This is the reason why dog owners are no longer surprised to see the pet vomiting plastic wrappers, little bits of wood and even parts of the dog’s toys. Dogs would probably eat anything interesting as they have a way of inducing vomiting to rid the stomach of offending substances. Dogs that vomit would act as if nothing happened. Instead of being worried, pet parents would usually be disgusted with the pet that remains active and have even eaten what was thrown up.
Up chucking what was ingested is the dog’s way of resolving stomach upset that results from dietary indiscretion. It is not surprising if dogs suffer from stomach upset that result to vomiting given its tendency to eat too much and to eat spoiled food and inedible substances. A dog introduced to a new diet or to a new treat can throw up what was eaten. Vomiting arising from this kind of situation would not require treatment. Pet parents would usually fast the pet for 24 hours to resolve its vomiting concern
Repeated vomiting though is a case for the vet as this condition can be an indication of an underlying health problem. The dog’s dietary indiscretion would not be the cause of chronic vomiting. A dog suffering from pancreatitis, peritonitis, kidney and liver diseases would throw up regularly. Parasite infestation and intestinal cancer can cause vomiting.
The dog’s vomiting episodes have to be stopped as it can result to dehydration. Anti emetic medication is given as a first treatment to stop the dog from vomiting repeatedly. A dog that throws up repeatedly may be suffering from an underlying disease. Treatment for the dog’s condition will depend on the cause. Chronic vomiting entails urgent medical attention. The dog will have to undergo a full clinical examination before the right treatment that would resolve the dog’s health concern can be administered.
